Best Audiobooks for Family Road Trips
Ah, the summer road trip. Who’s with me, memories of laying in the back of the station wagon, sleeping bags rolled out, fighting with your siblings for more space!
The memories of playing punch bug and searching for state license plates. My siblings and I have so many memories as we traveled with our parents each summer.
We have one famous family road trip memory that will go down in infamy. My dad cruising down the highway, us kids waving out the back window at the passing cars, when all of the sudden my sister and I start screaming.
Last minute packing went wrong! My dad had rushed to pack a garbage bag with last minute items. The bags secured to the top of our station wagon with our other luggage, ripped a hole, the contents – dolls, swimsuits, dirty clothes – were flying down the interstate.
“Daddy, our Sandy Seaweed dolls are flying down the road!”
Of course, my dad dutifully pulled over and gathered all of the items, dangerously from the highway. While my mom quietly held the look of “I told you so” on her face.
My kids love to hear this story as we pack our own family into the SUV each summer.
These days road trips are a bit different. Now our kids are strapped into 5-point harness car seats and everyone wants their own electronic device to stare at for the journey. We, like many families, try to manage the amount of screen time during summer travel. Especially when we make the voyage from Wisconsin to Maine. If we are not mindful our kids will spend the entire day on an electronic device.
One of our solutions to avoid brain drain from overuse of electronic devices is…..audible books. Whether you borrow from your local library, download them or buy them, Audible books are a wonderful way to enjoy family time during road trips. We love audible.com, an Amazon company.
My Audible subscription is one of my best-ever investments. We have built a nice audible library of books for both kids and adults. This list is our go-to during road trips.
Below is a list of a few of our favorites. This list is sure to help time pass and imaginations soar.
