Delicious Gluten Free Thanksgiving Recipes
Can you smell it? Those delicious aromas of a roasting turkey, sweet potatoes and of course, pumpkin pie; practically waiting to melt in your mouth? Yes, with Halloween over and Christmas still over a month out, it is time to embrace… and perhaps indulge… on Thanksgiving.
But while Thanksgiving tends to be a time to let loose and truly enjoy the food on the table, families with dietary restrictions, such as Celiac’s disease or a gluten sensitivity of any type, know that intricate meals, with mouthwatering ingredients can be a minefield of potential belly issues.
A gluten free lifestyle means watching the intake of products with wheat and grains, which cause pain, inflammation and bloating in the small intestine. And with holidays such as Thanksgiving, the copious amounts of food can be tempting for some. But have no fear this year! We are prepared to set out a feast fit for a King, gluten free and all, so you and your family can still enjoy all of the delicious moments.
What would Thanksgiving dinner be without the main star, the turkey? Thankfully, a fresh turkey, is always gluten free (GF), allowing you to properly, and safely, season it for your family. Packets of gravy or seasoning should never be used unless specifically stated that they are gluten free, however. And why would you use a packet of processed gunk, when the turkey drippings, whisked with an equal amount of white rice flour will guarantee a delicious… and gluten free gravy… in a matter of minutes!
Craving sweet potatoes this year? By switching out the regular flour to GF flour and finishing your dish just like Grandmom made her Sweet Potato Casserole, means everyone gets to enjoy this protein-packed super food.
And though Thanksgiving meals tend to be on the heavier side of things, let’s throw a little green in there for the sake of sanity, deal? My go-to Thanksgiving (and really favorite Fall dish in general) is a Kale & Brussels Sprout Salad with Walnuts & Lemon-Mustard Dressing! With toasty walnuts, nutrient-rich kale and a zesty lemon dressing, this salad is a hit at every Thanksgiving celebration.
Finally, who ends Thanksgiving without a sweet treat? NOT US! Using the same method as the sweet potatoes, swap out that gluten rich flour, for something like Bob’s Red Mill Rice Flour and you, are well on your way to a delectable, gluten free, food coma! Here’s an example, our Gluten Free Pumpkin Bar recipe.
Living a gluten free lifestyle is not always easy. From small print, ingredient reading to verifying a dish is safe when out to eat, these obstacles can be discouraging. But, with time, patience and the understanding of easy substitutes, every day eating… and holiday splurging… can be just as rewarding! Enjoy these yummy dishes, and your family, this holiday… both are worthy of giving thanks!
